Healthcare Hero Dr. Mohamed Manji is a Consultant Radiation Oncologist at the BC Cancer Agency and a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia. He is originally from the highland region of Southern Tanzania, and completed his education and training globally - in Mbeya, Dar-es-Salaam, Uganda, Trinidad and Toronto, Canada, and became the first Canadian-trained Ismaili Radiation Oncologist in Canada.

Working at the BC Cancer Agency since 1977, he has helped  treat cancer patients across B.C. while also remaining involved in teaching local and international residents  in Vancouver. Dr. Manji has also spent time abroad, working in Saudi Arabia to help modernize the Radiation Oncology Department at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center, and volunteering in Karachi and Nairobi to support the planning and development of the Radiation Oncology Departments at the Aga Khan University Hospitals.

Dr. Manji has also tirelessly served the Jamat in Canada since he immigrated in 1972 – he was the first Member for Health on the first Aga Khan Ismaili Regional Council of Ontario and Quebec, During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Manji and his team continued to manage cancer patients at the B.C. Cancer Agency, as these treatments were essential and could not be deferred. His Oncology department followed the strict public health measures around hand hygiene and masking, and increased the sanitization of their unit between patients. While these practices increased the time needed to treat each patient, they were critical to ensuring safe care for cancer patients in a pandemic. One of the challenges that Dr. Manji experienced during the pandemic was patients postponing visits to their family physicians or the ER due to the fear of contracting COVID-19. This fear led to delays in seeking care and screening for important illnesses such as cancer, which may subsequently challenge for the healthcare system. Dr. Manji’s advice for the Jamat and the public is to seek care without any hesitation and delay if you develop symptoms and feel that you need to be seen by a healthcare provider.

When he is not working or volunteering, Dr. Manji enjoys reading autobiographies, watching National Geographic documentaries, and listening to Gazals.
