Communication Skills for the Workplace Certificate, University of Alberta (Virtual)
The Communications Skills in the Workplace certificate was designed for our Jamat by the University of Alberta. This program is an opportunity for our Jamat to develop and improve communication and leadership skills for future opportunities and advancement in their careers.
Course Details:
- Registration Deadline: Sunday, August 15
- Start Date: September 2021 (Module 1)
- Location: Virtual (Zoom)
- Time: Monday to Friday, starting at 5:30pm PT | 6:30pm MT | 8:30pm ET. Each class will be two hours.
- Required Materials: Computer (with video conferencing features)
- Cost: Full subsidies will be provided to all eligible students for up to five courses
Module Overview:
- Critical Thinking and Vocabulary Building, Part I (20 hours)
This course supports English language learners in the development of intermediate skills and strategies in enhancing reading comprehension, fluency, critical thinking, and the acquisition of vocabulary-building strategies. (September 2 – September 17 or November 1 – November 15)
- Critical Thinking and Vocabulary Building, Part II (20 hours)
Part II of this course further supports critical reading skills, which will help participants to challenge reasoning, examine assumptions and identify biases. Through textual annotation, participants will learn to read closely and will be able to identify keywords and phrases and deepen their understanding of new vocabulary. (September 23 – October 6)
- Persuasive Presentation (20 hours)
This course is suitable for both learners and professionals who are looking to develop their public speaking and presentation skills, with an important focus on incorporating concepts of equity, diversity and inclusion. (October 13-14, October 18-27)
- Writing or Professional Communication (20 hours)
The goal of this course is to help participants improve their ability to communicate effectively and professionally. (November 16 – November 30)
- Leadership Fundamentals (21 hours) -
Topics for this course on leadership fundamentals include exploring leadership theories and practices, styles and strengths, beliefs and barriers, and reflections on leadership practices. (December 6 – December 17)
