Start a Career as a Commercial Truck Driver

Unemployed Albertans have an opportunity to start careers as commercial truck drivers through the Driving Back to Work Grant Program (DBTW).

Program Outline:

• Access funding to take the Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT) program to earn a Class 1 driver’s licence.
• Obtain skills needed to find success and a well-paying job as a professional truck driver.
• Only 400 people will be selected starting October 2021 to begin the Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT) in the coming weeks.
• The grant will cover an estimated $9,000 or about 90 per cent of the cost of the MELT program, that drivers are required to take before they can do their commercial carrier road test.
• All driver training and testing funded through the grant program must be completed by March 31, 2022.

Funding Eligibility:

• Unemployed and able to demonstrate Employment Insurance qualification.
• Hold an Alberta non-probationary driver’s licence.
• Legally entitled to work and train in Canada.
• Have sufficient English language skills to succeed in driver training and testing.
• Are ready, willing, and able to participate in training and planning to seek full-time employment in the commercial transportation industry (minimum 30 hours per week).
