Influenza Preparedness
The 2020-2021 Alberta Influenza Immunization program will begin Monday, October 19. All Albertans, 6 months of age and older, are eligible to be immunized free of charge. This year, Alberta Health Services (AHS) will only be offering immunization by pre-booked appointment to children under 5 years of age, including their family and members of the same household. There will be an online booking tool starting Tuesday, October 13. No drop-in clinics are available via AHS this year due to COVID-19.
All members of the general public are encouraged to visit their pharmacist or family physician. Please ensure you call ahead to determine if your pharmacy or physician is offering flu shots, and to book an appointment. Individuals who do not have a provincial health care number, or who live in a community where there are no other immunizing health care providers, can call Health Link at 811 to seek immunization through AHS.
Influenza immunization is more important this season than ever before. Protect yourself and others - book your appointment now.
Everyone is at risk of influenza. Therefore, we encourage everyone, including children 6 months of age or older, to get vaccinated. Influenza can make you very sick and lead to other health problems, especially if you:
- have heart or lung conditions, diabetes, a weak immune system, obesity, or other health problems
- live in a care facility, such as a nursing home
- are under 5 years, or older than 65 years
- are pregnant
