Winter Safety Tips

January 19, 2022 | Toronto

Winter brings cold temperatures and sometimes extreme weather conditions. Here are a few winter safety tips to keep you warm and safe, so you can enjoy your winter inside and out!

Get informed when going outdoors

  • Always check the weather before you leave home.
  • Look out for a wind chill warning. Warnings are based on local climate and are issued when significant wind chills are expected.
  • Dress in layers with a wind resistant outer layer.
  • When it is cold, wear a hat, mittens or insulated gloves. Keep your face warm with a scarf, neck tube or face mask.
  • Wear warm and waterproof footwear. When it is very cold, or when the wind chill is significant, cover as much exposed skin as possible. Your body's extremities, such as the ears, nose, fingers and toes lose heat the fastest.
  • Let someone know your destination, your route, and when you expect to arrive.

Stay safe indoors

  • Make sure you have working smoke alarms.
  • Don’t leave burning candles unattended.
  • Check on elderly relatives and neighbours to ensure they are warm enough and have sufficient supplies, particularly when the weather is cold or snowy. They might not feel comfortable going outside to shop and may require food, medications and other supplies.
  • In case of a power outage, when using generators, grills, and similar items, these should only be used outdoors in order to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

Have an Emergency Kit

  • Be prepared and ensure you have a family emergency plan and emergency kit.
  • Make sure your emergency kit is easy to find and carry in case you need to evacuate your home.
  • Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle and regularly update your supplies.
