Sundays at the Ismaili Centre: A Place of Miracles - The Story of a Children's Hospital in Kabul
In "A Place of Miracles: The Story of a Children's Hospital in Kabul and the People Whose Lives Have Been Changed by It", author Lee Hilling chronicles one of Afghanistan's most remarkable reconstruction success stories.
The French Medical Institute for Children (FMIC) was formed through an unusual partnership between two private, non-governmental organizations - the Aga Khan Development Network and the France-based humanitarian entity, La Chaine de l'Espoir, and two governments - the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and France. The result is an institution that has enabled children's lives to be saved that might have otherwise been lost. Nearly 1,600 children have been treated for congenital and acquired heart diseases, almost half of which had open-heart surgery. In its short history, FMIC has become the enabling catalyst for lives to be changed and dreams to be realized - a place where people have succeeded and survived against overwhelming obstacles and odds.
Author Lee Hilling currently holds the position of Consultant and Senior Advisor in the Office of the President, Aga Khan University. For more than 13 years – since it was created in April 2006 - he has been Chairman of the French Medical Institute for Children’s board.
