Acts of Faith: A Community Book Reading with Eboo Patel

January 10, 2021 | Canada

Join author, educator and interfaith leader Eboo Patel for an enlightening and interactive community book reading. The conversation will be moderated by Dr. Aleem Bharwani.

Acts of Faith is a remarkable account of growing up Muslim in America and coming to believe in religious pluralism, from one of the most prominent faith leaders in the United States. Eboo Patel’s story is a hopeful and moving testament to the power and passion of young people—and of the world-changing potential of an interfaith youth movement.

Attendees are recommended to have read the book prior to the discussion.

Food for thought:

  • The subtitle of the book mentions that this is the story of an ‘American’. Are there key differences in the experience of Canadian Ismailis and American Ismailis?
  • What parts of your Ismaili experience (personal story plus understanding of the Ismaili tariqa) commit you to pluralism?
  • Are there distinctive ways that Ismailis in North America can contribute to pluralism?

Eboo Patel is the founder of Interfaith Youth Core, an international non-profit organization that aims to promote interfaith cooperation. He served as a member of President Barack Obama's inaugural Advisory Council on Faith-Based Neighbourhood Partnerships. He is the author of a number of books including his 2007 autobiography, Acts of Faith and the more recent publication, Out of Many Faiths: Religious Diversity and the American Promise.
