Kufic Calligraphy (Part 2) | The Ismaili Canada

Kufic Calligraphy (Part 2)

January 5, 2021 | Canada

Back by popular demand - a hands-on, interactive workshop on Kufic calligraphy!

This program builds on the Fundamentals of Kufic Calligraphy shared in Part 1.

Learn from art educator and calligraphy expert, Jalal Gilani, how to re-create basic structural forms of Arabic and Urdu letters into geometric designs. This session will build on what was covered in part 1 of the workshop. Step-by-step instructions will be provided, so viewers can mimic the instructor electronically using Inkscape, a free downloadable program. The audience can also choose to follow along with a pencil and paper.

Kufic script has long been used as the preferred calligraphy style for Quranic transcription and architectural decoration. It is characterized by angular, rectilinear letterforms with a horizontal orientation. The script version you will learn to create in this workshop is the square Kufic style.
