COVID-19: Riding the Next Wave

Join infectious disease physicians Dr. Karim Ali and Dr. Zain Chagla as they discuss the implications of the second wave of COVID-19. The session will be moderated by Shallah Jamal-Somani, the member for Public Health and Pandemic Response on the Aga Khan Health Board for Canada.

The webinar will focus on the epidemiology of COVID-19, both worldwide and in Canada. The panel will also discuss treatment advances, prevention strategies in terms of personal risks, the path forward, and potential vaccine developments.

Dr. Zain Chagla completed his B.Sc. and MD at Queen’s University, Internal Medicine Residency at Western University, and received an Infectious Diseases fellowship from McMaster University. He also has a Masters in Science (Infectious Diseases) and Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.  He is currently an Associate Professor at McMaster University; the Co-Medical Director of Infection Control at St. Joseph’s Healthcare in Hamilton, Niagara Health System; and a consultant in Infection Control at Woodstock General Hospital.

Throughout the COVID response, Dr. Chagla has been part of policy planning - locally, provincially, and federally.  He has been a part of numerous clinical trials on COVID-19 therapies, and has multiple publications on COVID-19 research, epidemiology, testing, and infection control. He has been active in the media, providing updates to the public on the COVID-19 crisis, and has produced a number of op-ed pieces on testing, disease elimination, and public health interventions.

Dr. Chagla teaches at McMaster University, and has won the Clinical Teaching Award for Internal Medicine, and has also received a Young Investigator Grant for his work in supporting undergraduate medical education at the University of Namibia.

Dr. Karim F. Ali attended Ziauddin Medical University in Karachi, Pakistan. He then went on to complete his Internal Medicine Residency at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and his Infectious Disease Fellowship at Creighton University and the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.

Dr. Ali joined Niagara Health in 2012 and established the Division of Infectious Diseases. He currently serves as the Director of the Division of Infectious Diseases and Antimicrobial Stewardship Program at Niagara Health. He is also the Pandemic Preparedness Lead for the organization. Dr. Ali is involved in multiple national and international clinical trials for COVID-19, and he is an Assistant Clinical Professor (Adjunct) in Infectious Diseases at McMaster University. He also volunteers with Positive Living Niagara and their Streetworks program.
