Team Canada's Performance at the Jubilee Games | The Ismaili Canada

The Jubilee Games in Dubai were filled with stories of heroic wins and heartbreaking losses, as Ismaili athletes from around the world performed at their very best and demonstrated the resilience that only high achievers are known to have.  For Team Canada, the Jubilee Games were a resounding success.  Our athletes went to the Games prepared – they had trained hard and were ready to take on the world. They demonstrated excellence in the sports that they participated, supported and cheered each other and athletes from other countries, and demonstrated the spirit of unity and #OneJamat that prevailed throughout the Games. Our athletes brought home the highest number of medals - 21 gold and 63 in total - winning the hearts of the entire Jamat.  Congratulations to all Team Canada’s athletes, coaches and team managers!

Day 8 Update

Day 8 marked the final day of competition. Congratulations to Team Canada who made us proud with phenomenal success across the board. During the Closing Ceremonies, which featured a vibrant display of cultures and performances from around the world, Dr. Mahmoud Eboo, Chairman of the Ismaili Leaders International Forum, announced that the next Jubilee Games are anticipated to be held in 2020. At this time, we would like to thank all Canadian athletes, coaches and volunteers for their extraordinary hard work and dedication, and to the Jamat for their constant support. The Jubilee Games showcased our  incredible commitment to excellence, strength in diversity, and unity. We are proud to be one global Jamat.

Day 7 Update

The excitement on Day 7 of the Jubilee Games has been palpable, as final games are held in the various sports. The sound of drums, horns and enthusiastic cheering can be heard throughout. Gold medals were awarded to the USA for men’s basketball, to Tajikistan for women's and men’s international volleyball, and to Canada for women’s and men’s soccer, amongst many others. Canada currently leads the medal standings, followed by Tajikistan and Pakistan. 

Day 6 Update

Day 6 at the Jubilee Games started at midnight for some teams, with a cricket match between India and Pakistan, which drew over 300 spectators.  While the countries are well known for their rivalries, spectators cheered often in unison for one another, keeping the theme of the Games unity always in mind.  Pakistan won this game.  Team Canada continued to do well at the Games, beginning the day with medals in Track and Field and wins in Table Tennis, Tennis, Squash and Badminton. The evening ended with another nail-biting men's soccer game between Canada Red and Tajikistan White which went into overtime and decided on penalty shots!  Canada also won its Women’s Basketball (against Tajikistan) and Women’s Soccer (against UK).  Daily updates, including Pictures and videos from the event can be found on TheIsmaili.org.

Day 5 Update

After an evening in which our athletes saw world-class performers from diverse Ismaili tariqas, Team Canada was off to a good start this morning!  Now, on Day 5, we are starting to get into the knock-out games in different sports. The day began with a number of wins in various sports, and the evening finished with a very intense Men’s soccer game between Canada and the US, ending in an overtime win for Canada! 

Day 4 Update

Team Canada’s successes at the Jubilee Games continued today, Day 4!  With a late night win against France in soccer, Team Canada continued bringing home medals and winning various sports.  As the Games continue, the theme of unity as One Jamat is becoming increasingly evident, as athletes from one country cheer for another! Today’s major highlight was the Global Concert, which included performances from international artistes like Nobovar Chanorav and Salim-Sulaiman.

Day 3 Update

Following an exciting evening of the Opening Ceremony and of participants coming together to meet new friends in the Global Village, Day three at the Jubilee Games began with a very early start at 430 am to beat the heat.  Team Canada played cricket games against Bangladesh and Kenya winning both.  The day’s successes continued, as Canada won its first medals in Track and Field and several individual and team games.
