Meet The Women and Girls Who Are Shaping Our World Today - and Every Day

For over 100 years, March 8 has marked International Women’s Day around the world; a day for recognizing the achievements and contributions of women and girls everywhere. What started as an equal rights labour movement in the US, has now evolved into a full-fledged global event. The Day is marked at every scale, from global programs at the United Nations, to grassroots initiatives in communities everywhere. 

Gender equality in Islamic faith is a widely-explored study. Ismaili Muslims see equality among people as a building block of civil society. In North America, the conversation about equality across genders has sustained attention at all levels. To mark International Women’s Day 2017 in Canada, the Ismaili Centre Toronto and Ismaili Centre Burnaby are each hosting unique events to spotlight achievements of women and showcase their role in advancing society. The Ismaili Womens’ Portfolio, a volunteer group of Canadian women from all walks of life, have assembled a backdrop of stirring social, cultural and political achievements of women in two separate events on each coast of Canada. The events will showcase specific stories from women who are shaping our world. The approach in mind was to bring together the right stories, and host public events in the striking spaces of the Ismaili Centres, to increase visibility on the issues and spark dialogue about equality in today’s world. 

From Canada, we invite you to use March 8, International Women’s Day to reflect on acts of courage and determination by women you know, who have played an extraordinary role in your life, and whenever the time comes, demonstrate equality among all people, always.
