Valentine’s Day at Skyview Early Learning Village

Intergenerational programming, such as the one implemented at Skyview Early Learning Village located at Generations Calgary, is a valuable approach to building bridges between different generations and creating meaningful connections between people of different ages.

Research has shown that intergenerational interactions can benefit both children and older adults.  For children, it can help develop their social skills, empathy, and emotional intelligence, while also reducing ageism and stereotypes.  For older adults, it can help combat loneliness and social isolation, improve cognitive function and mental health,  and increase their sense of purpose and self-esteem.

This Valentine’s Day, children gave cards and hugs to residents which was heartwarming for everyone involved.  The children were involved in making the cards themselves, which not only helps them develop their creativity and artistic skills but also teaches them the value of giving and showing kindness to others.  The children were also excited to explore the other areas of the building.

Overall, the intergenerational programming at Skyview Early Learning Village is an excellent example of how we can create a more inclusive and connected society by bringing different age groups together.  It teaches children important values such as kindness, empathy and respect, while also benefiting the well-being of older adults.

Please visit Skyview Early Learning Village for information or call 1-403-731-9430 to book a tour.

Early Childhood Educators

Skyview Early Learning Village is located in a brand new, purpose-built wing of the Generations Calgary – Care Complex. We provide an intergenerational program that allows children to positively interact with the residents along with our curriculum Flight: Alberta’s Early Learning and Care Framework.

We are currently looking for dedicated, motivated, and passionate individuals to join our team as Early Childhood Educators.

Job Description

Skyview Early Learning Village Is Opening

We are pleased to announce the opening of our early childhood center, Skyview Early Learning Village at the Calgary Generations campus. It is located at 120 Skyview Ranch Drive NE.

The Skyview Early Learning Village offers a safe and nurturing environment for young learners, while enriching the physical, social, emotional, creative and intellectual development of your child. We recognize the role that every member of our village plays in shaping the values and attitudes of our future global citizens.

Our programming recognizes that the early years are the most critical for a child’s growth and development. Young children learn best in the context of appropriate sensory inputs as well as stable and supportive relationships and interactions. The early years also build the foundations for thinking, language and behavioural attitudes.

Our Learning Environment

We foster strong, active, and energetic early childhood culture. Our happy, safe, and organized learning spaces are designed to provide an enriching environment for young learners that include:

  • a rich array of engaging materials that support social interactions as well as build autonomy and initiative in children.
  • materials that are thoughtfully designed and selected to reflect the linguistic and cultural heritage of our students and their families.
  • promote literacy, numeracy, and foundational skills necessary for future school success.
  • equipment to support active development through physical play and interaction.

Our Curriculum

We follow Flight - Alberta’s Early Learning and Care Curriculum Framework which guides the practice of educators working with children and their families. Children’s play is central to the curriculum framework. It is an active, exploratory, creative, expressive process, embedded in children’s everyday experiences and through which children participate in, learn about and actively make sense of the world. (Makovichuk, L., Hewes, J., Lirette, P., & Thomas, N. (2014). Flight: Alberta’s early learning and care framework.) Learn more about FLIGHT here

Our curriculum is enriched by on-site intergenerational programming. This unique offering allows children to positively interact with the residents of Generations, Calgary. While benefiting both the young and the aged, it enhances family values, promotes appreciation for cultural and linguistic heritage, fosters empathy, brings joy, and nurtures a feeling of belonging in all ages under one roof.

Our Educators

Teresa Ebbert, our centre Director, has a degree in Human Service Administration and a diploma in Early Childhood Development. She has over 25 years experience in childcare, out of school care and early intervention programs. She is passionate about high quality, inclusive programming for children and families.

Our trained educators recognize their role as co-constructors of the flight curriculum in partnership with each child to ensure that they can explore and develop their own interests at their own pace.

Our care providers value their position as co-learners, co-researchers, and co-imaginers of possibilities alongside and in relationship with children, families, and others in our dynamic inter-generational community.

Our Operator

Navroz Celebrations at Generations Calgary

The festival of Navroz marks the beginning of a new year and first day of spring. At Generations Calgary celebrating Navroz this year means embracing diversity. This included their first Haft-seen (also spelt Sin), a decorative table arrangement of seven (Haft) items that start with the letter S (Seen/Sin). Traditionally, the items denoted the seven days of creation with each item symbolizing nature.

Mawlana Hazar Imam remarked in his convocation address at University of Alberta in Edmonton on June 9, 2009 “Pluralism means not only accepting, but embracing human difference. [Pluralism] sees the world’s variety as a blessing rather than a burden…”

Please enjoy the memories and video from Generations Calgary's Navroz celebrations as we look forward to the new year with renewed hope and joy.
