Duke of Edinburgh Awards | The Ismaili Canada

THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH'S INTERNATIONAL AWARD

Our next award ceremony is our Bronze Ceremony on Wednesday, September 27th at 8:30pm at the Ismaili Centre Burnaby - Council Chambers.

The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award Program offers youth between the ages of 14 and 24, a balanced, non-competitive program of voluntary activities, which encourages personal discovery and growth, self-reliance, perseverance, responsibility to themselves and service to their community. It is designed to complement academic development.

The Award has three levels ~ Bronze, Silver and Gold ~ reflecting the age and development of the participants. At each level there are four sections to complete:

  • Community Service (an opportunity to provide voluntary service to others in the community)
  • Expeditions (undertake challenging journeys of discovery and adventure)
  • Skills Development (discover and develop personal interests and practical skills)
  • Physical Recreation (improve physical fitness by participating in physical activities)

Here is a quick overview of each of the levels of The Award and what is required for each level. More information is available in the Participant Information Package.

An additional 26 weeks on a section of your choice is required for Direct Entrants (participants who have not completed the Bronze level). The Adventurous Journey is 3 days and 2 nights. It takes a minimum of 26 weeks to achieve the Silver level for those who are Bronze Award Holders or 52 weeks for those who go directly into Silver.

The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award, at any level, clearly identifies a candidate as having a well-rounded range of interests, who actively participates in his or her community and is able to sustain a commitment. This is an advantage when applying to colleges, universities or when seeking employment.
