Team Canada Updates: The Games Have Begun

This week, Team Canada athletes and staff, and hundreds of volunteers who are assisting in various capacities, departed for Dubai to participate in the Jubilee Games being held July 22 to 29. Regular updates, as well as the opening and closing ceremonies and select finals on the last day of the Games will be featured on the TheIsmaili.org and social media.

Want to post your own updates?

If you are attending the Games to support our athletes, we encourage you to post your own updates about the Games and our performance on your social media site.  Keep in mind the following:

• Be very careful about taking and posting any pictures of Dubai locals:  you must ask permission first.
• Avoid any language and pictures that may be considered derogatory or indecent. Avoid posting anything that may cause embarrassment to yourself, your family, and/or the Jamat.  Remember, once posted on social media, it can never be completely deleted.
• Use one of the official hashtags:  #JubileeGames, #OneJamat, and if you are posting an update on a Canadian athlete or team, use #JGCan or #JGTeamCanada. Please do not use #TeamCanada to avoid confusion with Canada’s Olympics team.

The Council for Canada is delighted to inform the Jamat that a commemorative ceremony was held on Friday, July 15, 2016 to celebrate the inauguration of the new Calgary Westwinds Jamatkhana with Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi, Council for Canada President Malik Talib as well as Jamati, community and volunteer leaders and representatives.

Located on almost 7 acres of land, the new Westwinds Jamatkhana replaces Calgary’s Airways Jamatkhana, a Jamatkhana that the Calgary Jamat has enjoyed attending since 1980.  Westwinds Jamatkhana will help to better meet a growing need within the Calgary Jamat.

In addition to providing space for congregational prayer and tariqah practices, the Jamatkhana will also offer a venue for cultural events, intellectual discussions and social gatherings. It features spaces for Bait-ul-Ilm classes, institutional offices and a multi-purpose social hall.

We express immense gratitude to all the sevadaries who have contributed to making this historic moment possible for the Prairies Jamat.

On this auspicious and joyous occasion, we convey Mubaraki to all members of the Jamat, and offer our humble shukrana to Mawlana Hazar Imam for this magnificent facility that the Jamat will cherish for years to come.

• If you have not received an e-mail containing a Unique Identification Code, please send your child's full name and date of birth to prairies.bui@iicanada.org. We will send you the Unique Identification Code for your child and a link where you can register and select an offering.
• If you are having difficulty using the Unique Identification Code you received in an e-mail, it is likely that our database contains the incorrect birthdate for your child. Please e-mail prairies.bui@iicanada.org and we will send you the incorrect birthdate that is in our system. Use this incorrect birthdate to enter the system, and once you've logged in, please correct the birthdate.
• If you are enrolling your child in the pre-primary program, please fill out and sign the Registration/Waiver form and Offering Selection form and return them to prairies.bui@iicanada.org or to a BUI volunteer seated in the Jamatkhana foyer every Friday from July 22nd to August 12th.
• If your child is a new student, please fill out and sign the Registration/Waiver form and Offering Selection form and return to prairies.bui@iicanada.org or to a BUI volunteer seated in the Jamatkhana foyer every Friday from July 22nd to August 12th.

Pre-primary classes are parented, and as such, will require a parent or primary caregiver to attend with the child. Information and registration will take place as follows:

Friday, August 12th at Headquarters Jamatkhana.

Please note that those that are 5 or turning 5 by February 28, 2017, and are new to the Calgary BUI System can register at this time and will also need to register in Jamatkhana.

Kalaam-e-Mawla – Wisdom of Hazrat ‘Ali

A new CD of selected verses of Kalaam-e-Mawla, recited with musical accompaniment, is available for purchase at the literature counter. The CD also includes a gist and translation of the recited verses.

A secular facility, the Delegation offers a centre for building relationships, enabling quiet diplomacy and disseminating knowledge and information while reflecting the wide-ranging humanistic and humanitarian agenda of the Aga Khan Development Network.

The Visitor Program provides the public with an opportunity to explore the building through regularly scheduled open house hours – select Wednesday evenings from 5:00pm to 7:00pm and select Saturday afternoons from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. Due to the nature of events held at the Delegation, the schedule is subject to change. Please check www.akfc.ca in advance to ensure that the tour will take place on the day of your visit. Thank you for understanding.

Please plan on approximately 30 minutes for your visit. Tours will be held every half hour Reservations are not required during the open house days stated below. However, if you are unable to come during our open-house times, a self-guided tour can be arranged, although there will be limited access to some areas of the building. To arrange for a self-guided tour, please contact visitorprogram@akfc.net or call 1-800-267-2532.

Truck drivers operate light and heavy trucks, including multi-trailer combinations to transport goods and materials over urban, interurban, provincial and international routes. Individuals (or professionals) in this occupation must have excellent driving skills, good judgement, and an ability to remain focused for extended periods of time to react quickly in emergency situations. Employment opportunities are available with trucking, transportation and manufacturing companies or you could be self-employed.

Truck Drivers

• Get special permits and other documents required to transport cargo on international routes
• Load, secure and unload trailers and ensure safety and security of cargo
• Do pre-trip inspections of vehicle systems and equipment such as tires, lights and brakes
• Record cargo information, distance travelled, fuel consumption and other information in log book or on on-board computer
• Do emergency roadside repairs

• Completion of secondary school may be required (dependent on employer)
• Class 3 commercial license to operate vehicles with more than two axles
• Class 1 driver’s license for trucks with semi-trailers
