Diamond Jubilee Visit 2018: Dinner, Raas, and Celebrations

Dinner, raas, and cultural celebrations to celebrate Mawlana Hazar Imam's Diamond Jubilee visit to Canada will be held in all Jamatkhanas on Saturday, May 12 after Jamati ceremonies. The Jamat and multi-faith family members are invited to join. The celebrations at Ottawa Headquarters Jamatkhana will include dinner, a Raas program and music from Central Asia by the "One Jamat" band from Montreal including Ali Shair Ahmadi, Massud Muhiby, Saba Rawjani and Hamid Zafar.

The Winter 2018 issue of The Ismaili Canada magazine is the third issue of the magazine on the Jubilees theme. The first issue of summer 2017 was on the Golden and Diamond Jubilees of Mawlana Sultan Mahomed Shah; the second issue of winter 2017 was on the Platinum Jubilee of Mawlana Sultan Mahomed Shah and the Silver and Golden Jubilees of Mawlana Hazar Imam with the start of the Diamond Jubilee visits in 2017. The recent issue is on Mawlana Hazar Imam's Diamond Jubilee visits to Canada as well as other places concluding in Portugal.

The print edition is on sale at Jamatkhana Literature Centres. If you wish to subscribe to have copies mailed to your home, or for more information, please email The Ismaili Canada magazine office.

Every story has a thread that subtly weaves through the fabric of our lives, shaping who we become. For Shamila Ilyasi, this thread is her unending love for books and a deep curiosity about the world. Born in Afghanistan and raised across continents, her life is a remarkable tale of discovery, resilience, and the profound power of dreams.

At the age of nine, Shamila and her family made a new home in Canada. Arriving without any knowledge of English or French, the primary language of her new environment, she faced daunting challenges. Despite these obstacles, books became her refuge.

"Even before I understood the words, books spoke to me," Shamila recalls. "They showed me pictures, and with my imagination, I filled in the gaps. But not being able to communicate was a painful beginning — it isolated me from other children and made participating in school activities difficult."

Prince Amyn Awarded Castelo Branco's Gold Medal

Prince Amyn was honoured with the gold medal of Castelo Branco on Friday, May 10, 2024 in recognition of his efforts to promote arts and culture in Portugal and around the world.

This prestigious award, the city’s highest distinction, was unanimously approved by the Municipal Council, and presented during the 253rd-anniversary celebrations of Castelo Branco’s elevation to city status. 

A hub of historical and cultural heritage, Castelo Branco in central Portugal is known for its ancient gardens, architectural marvels, and colourful embroidery—an art form symbolic of the city's identity and craftsmanship.
