Winter Safety

The heightened risk of power outages due to extreme cold temperatures underscores the importance of emergency preparedness. Explore the following resources to ensure readiness for emergencies, safeguarding yourself, your family, and your community.

Here are some tips for making emergency preparedness part of your routine:

1. Stay informed

Stay up to date through your local emergency warning system.

Alberta

Saskatchewan

Manitoba

2. Indoor safety

  • Make sure you have working smoke alarms.
  • Don’t leave burning candles unattended.
  • Check on elderly relatives and neighbours to ensure they are warm enough and have sufficient supplies, particularly when the weather is cold or snowy. They might not feel comfortable going outside to shop and may require food, medications, and other supplies.
  • In case of a power outage, generators, grills, and similar items should only be used safely outdoors in order to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

3. Plan ahead before going outdoors

  • Always check the weather before you leave home.
  • Look out for a wind chill warning. Warnings are based on local climate and are issued when significant wind chills are expected.
  • Dress in layers with a wind resistant outer layer.
  • When it is cold, wear a hat, mittens or insulated gloves. Keep your face warm with a scarf, neck tube or face mask.
  • Wear warm and waterproof footwear. When it is very cold, or when the wind chill is significant, cover as much exposed skin as possible. Your body's extremities, such as the ears, nose, fingers and toes lose heat the fastest.
  • Let someone know your destination, your route, and when you expect to arrive.

4. Make an emergency plan

Stay up to date on your risk to the hazards within your community. An emergency plan can help you and your family respond effectively to emergency or disaster situations. It can also help to cope with the stress that these situations bring.

5. Build an emergency kit

Make sure you have an emergency kit in your home and vehicle. This kit should be easy to find and carry, and the supplies should be regularly updated. In the case of power outages, an emergency kit with supplies such as water, non-perishable food, batteries, blankets, a flashlight, and a crank-powered radio can help to keep you safe and comfortable.

6. Community connections

Knowing your neighbours is an important part of creating community resilience. It helps to reduce stress, and ask for or offer help in times when it is most in need.

Salgirah Mubarak

On behalf of all Prairies Jamati institutions and Jamati and Majalis Mukhi Kamadia Sahebs and Mukhiani Kamadiani Sahebas, we wish the entire Jamat a heartfelt Salgirah Mubarak!

This past year was especially significant as it marked 50 years of the Jamat’s establishment and strong presence in Canada. Canada has welcomed the Jamat with immense warmth and generosity, and Jamati members have had the opportunity to develop roots in the peace and security of this new home while significantly contributing to Canada’s rich cultural mosaic and civil society.

The Jamat’s unity and generosity of spirit and resources have helped advance the stability of the local and global Jamat. The effects of global conflict and insecurity, climate change, economic uncertainty, and physical and mental health continue to challenge us all.

The Canadian Jamat is anticipated to grow as we continue to welcome murids from various parts of the world. Let us set ourselves up for future success and do everything we can to support and welcome our brothers and sisters. This Salgirah, let us all contribute to building an environment of warmth and friendship, and to extending new bridges of love and concern to newcomers and familiar faces alike. We encourage all those who are in need of support, information, or a helping hand to reach out as needed via Access, and to remember that we are here for one another. Thank you for your support in helping the Jamat continue to build from strength to strength.

Reflecting on the significance of the 87th Salgirah, it is through Mawlana Hazar Imam’s continued guidance and institutional endeavours that we have the courage and faith to overcome adversity and approach new situations with strength and confidence. His tireless efforts have enabled the Jamat to look ahead and plan for our futures with hope, faith, and optimism. For this, we are ever grateful.

During Mawlana Hazar Imam’s 80th birthday celebrations, he shared his vision for the Jamat’s success in the future: "As we look ahead, the Jamat is likely to become more and more a global community…but the essence of the Jamat, the ethics of our faith, the principles which we believe in and which we seek to practice in our lives are the essence of how our community will stay united."

Salgirah Mubarak to each one of you — with prayers for peace, easing of all difficulties, and immense barakah.

BUI Registration

Bait-ul-Ilm (BUI) is a religious education program for all Jamati children and youth ages 4-17 years.

Students are guided in exploring aspects of Islam that relate to ethics, thought and culture within Muslim societies and the Ismaili Tariqah, all within a broad framework. BUI promotes the understanding, peer support and skill-development needed to actively engage with the principles of our faith and utilize them for personal well-being, decision-making and inspiration.

In the 2023-24 academic year, BUI will offer a new Recitation & Practices Program in all regions. Pre-primary and primary students will learn and explore daily and devotional tariqah recitations and practices as part of their BUI weekly in-person programming. Specific offerings may vary by centre.

New students can register for Bait-ul-Ilm online. Returning students should have received a personalized link by email which can be used to register.

We hope to see you soon!
