Today, Ismailis the world over will commemorate with great joy the anniversary of Mawlana Hazar Imam’s July 11, 1957 accession to the throne of Imamat.
In those sixty-two years, the Canadian Jamat has catapulted from a small, largely struggling community to one that has firmly established roots, untold talent and vibrancy, is pluralistic in its makeup, and regularly makes significant and notable contributions to the quality of life of its fellow citizens.
What possible force could propel a community so far, so fast, to be so extraordinarily blessed? Today, we celebrate the answer to that question, and we hope that you will join all of us in joy and in celebration of our Imam’s guiding hand, and of a life dedicated to our spiritual and material well-being.
In demonstrating our gratitude, let us consider a redoubling of our commitment to living the values of the faith, alleviating poverty and supporting our most vulnerable, sharing knowledge and resources for the benefit of Canadian civil society, the global Jamat and broader community, using Canada as a base upon which to promote global peace and pluralism, and perhaps most importantly, resolving to attend to our spiritual growth and fulfilment.
Imamat Day this year will represent a time of transition, as both Jamati and Institutional office holders come to the end of their respective terms. Institutions must remain dynamic, and transition provides the opportunity for re-invigoration and renewal. It allows for new spirits and ideas, balanced by the experience and wisdom of years past. It is a transition characterised by both change and continuity, in a tradition established by over 1400 years of service to the Imam. For the indescribable privilege of service that has been accorded to us, we offer our sincere shukrana.
There are untold many in the Jamat who give of themselves for the benefit of others. To every volunteer, visible or hidden, who contributes to the well-being of our brothers and sisters in the Jamat or broader community, we extend our deepest appreciation and love.
Finally, for all the times we knowingly or inadvertently hurt feelings, made errors or were responsible for oversights and failings, we seek your forgiveness, and we thank you for the incredible patience and understanding that has been the hallmark of the Canadian Jamat.
Thank you, Imamat Day Mubarak, and Khuda Hafez.
