Ages: Birth – 4

The Supportive Environments and Experiences for Development (SEED) program is a national early childhood development (ECD) initiative for parents / caregivers and Ismaili children aged birth to four years (Ontario: birth to three years). Weekly sessions enable facilitated group discussions for families and promote age-appropriate developmental experiences in music and movement, early literacy, spirituality and faith, and school readiness. An electronic format (e-SEED) program is available for families with limited geographic access to an existing SEED centre.

ISTAR

Grades: 8 -12

The 2020 ISTAR Leadership Summit is a national initiative by the Aga Khan Education Board for Canada, with a mission to identify and develop ethical leaders who are inspired and commited to advancing positive change, and improving the quality of life of individuals within their communities and throughout the world. Join us to explore and understand our different identities, reflect on the guidance of our Imam, discover global challenges and careers of the future, and develop a blueprint for mapping and pursuing your aspirations.

Early Learning Centre and Enhanced Learning Centre

Grades: KG - 6

The Early Learning Centre/ Enhanced Learning Centre (ELC) is a program that focuses on Literacy and Numeracy for students who are in Kindergarten to Grade 6. The program focuses on students who will benefit from the support of professional teachers on a weekly basis throughout the school year. Acceptance into the program is dependent on academic need and it is mandatory to submit the most recent report card at the time of registration.

ROBOTICS

Robotics for Beginners (Level 1)
FIRST LEGO League Jr. (FLLJr) Robotics Program

Ages: 6 – 9

Duration: 16 hours (8 weeks x 2 hrs/week)

A hands-on program designed to introduce science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) concepts to young children. In teams, children explore a real-world scientific problem such as food safety, recycling, energy, etc. and construct a motorized model using LEGO elements. In the process, students learn about teamwork, the wonders of science and technology, and core values including respect, sharing, and critical thinking. Acceptance will be on a first-come first-serve basis; however, given the under-representation of women in STEM fields, priority will be given to female students if required to achieve equal participation of both genders. Priority will also be given to older students that may not have an opportunity to participate in future iterations of the program due to age.

 

 

 

Robotics for Beginners (Level 2)
FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Robotics Program

Ages: 10 - 14

Duration: 24 hours (8 weeks x 3 hrs/week)

Prerequisite: Preference may be given to students that have completed the FLL Jr Program

A hands-on program designed to allow students between the ages of 10 and 14 to learn, play and compete across cience, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) concepts. In teams, students are tasked with missions against a real-world scientific problem such as food safety, recycling, energy, etc. On a tabletop map, they receive points for successfully completing as many missions as possible in a timed, competitive environment. Acceptance will be on a first-come first-serve basis; however, given the under-representation of women in STEM fields, priority will be given to female students if required to achieve equal participation of both genders.

 

 

iCOMPUTE

iCOMPUTE for Parents
Computer Coding Program

Ages: Adult

Duration: 12 hours (4 weeks x 3 hrs/week)

A program designed for parents of students in the iCOMPUTE program. This program aims to introduce parents to computing concepts and put these concepts into practice with hands-on coding experience. iCOMPUTE for Parents will take participants through a condensed version of all three iCOMPUTE levels as part of the 4 week program. No prior coding experience is required, but participants should be comfortable using a computer. iCOMPUTE (Level 1)
Computer Coding Program

Ages: 9 – 11

Duration: 21 hours (7 weeks x 3 hrs/week)

A program designed to teach children how to solve problems, think creatively and express themselves using the computer. Children will design a computer game and learn how to make characters move, dance and sing using Scratch, a simple programming language designed by MIT. No prior experience in coding is required. iCOMPUTE (LEVEL 2)
Computer Coding Program

Ages: 11-13

Duration: 24 hours (8 weeks x 3 hrs/week)

 

Students learn to design a mobile app that meets a social need. In the process, they learn about understanding business requirements, design development, and coding, using MIT's App Inventor. iCOMPUTE (LEVEL 3) 
Computer Coding Program

Ages: 14-16

Duration: 24 hours (8 weeks x 3 hrs/week)

 

Students are introduced to basic principles of descriptive and inferential statistics using R. R is a powerful tool and leading language in statistics and data analysis. Concepts include data scrubbing, linear regression, animated graphing, interpreting data, and effectively communicating data, analysis and conclusions. Note that students will be learning advanced statistics and should therefore be proficient in math. INNOTECH

INNOTECH (NEW!)
3D Printing, Virtual Reality, Internet of Things (IoT)

Ages: 10-14

Duration: 16 hours (8 weeks x 2 hrs/week)


InnoTech is designed to teach STEM concepts and expose students to emerging technologies including 3D printing, the Internet of Things, and Virtual Reality. The curriclum aims to promote a growth mindset by presenting deliberate practice as a means to skill acquisition.
 

 

LET'S SPEAK


Let's Speak! (LEVEL 1) 
Public Speaking and Communications Program

Ages: 6-7

Duration: 16 hours (8 weeks x 2 hrs/week)

Let's Speak! Level 1 is designed to expose students to various dimensions of communication and to enhance their clarity and artistry of communication. Students will learn techniques of active listening including picking up on and conveying non-verbal cues; conversing with expression, inflection, and emphasis; and articulating with language that is imaginative and creative. Key texts are provided for the duration of the program. Central themes are pluralism and community, and program culminates in a Reader's Theatre performance. Key texts used are "The Enormous Turnip" by Alexei Tostoy, "Alien in My House" by Shenaaz Nanji, and "Treasure for Lunch" by Shenaaz Nanji.

 

 

 

Let's Speak! (LEVEL 2) 
Public Speaking and Communications Program

Ages: 8-9

Duration: 16 hours (8 weeks x 2 hrs/week)

Let's Speak! Level 2 introduces students to the dramatic arts. Students learn to tell stories effectively, and to communicate with vocal expression, body language, and timing. The central theme is empathy and understanding the 'other', and the key text is the Newbery Honor ook "The Hundred Dresses" by Eleanor Estes. The program culminates in the performance of a play adaptation of the book. 

 

 


 

Let's Speak (LEVEL 3)
Public Speaking and Communications Program

Ages: Grades 5-6

Duration: 16 hours (8 weeks x 2 hrs/week)

 

The Let's Speak Level 3 program uses two young adult novels as a framework to discuss, reflect, and understand diverse perspectives about immigrant and refugee experiences. Key texts are "Breadwinner" by Deborah Ellis (experience of Afghanistan) and "Child of Dandelions" by Shenaaz Nanji (experience of Uganda). Students learn to evaluate sources of information, construct arguments, analyze and deconstruct arguments, and effectively present arguments. Program culminates in a formal debate. Ismaili Debate

Ismaili Debate Initiative
Ages: Grades 7-12

The Ismaili Debate Initiative (IDI) helps students learn the skills needed to debate with school teams to grow both academically and professionally. Participants in IDI will learn from experienced senior student debaters that have excelled in regional, national, and international competitions. Participants will develop their public speaking and research skills, learn how to start their own clubs at school, and learn strategies to be successful in tournaments. IDI will meet in a Jamatkhana space in each region. For more information contact:
