Shakiba comes from a family background that values education, and that has inspired her journey. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Toronto, a Master of Arts in Muslim History and Civilization, a Master of Education at the University of London, and she recently completed her third Master's degree in Public Policy, Administration, and Law from York University. During her most recent Master’s degree, she maintained a full-time job and cared for her toddler.
As a young immigrant in Canada, Shakiba experienced a gap in what she learned about her history, faith, and culture. The STEP program allowed her the opportunity to not only learn her history and become confident in her identity as part of an Ismaili Muslim diaspora living in Canada, but also to teach Ismaili Muslim youth. Children and youth are the future ambassadors the community - living their lives grounded in the values and ethics of our faith.
Shakiba aspires to be a role model, particularly for young Afghan girls in Canada. She is resilient and dedicated both personally and professionally. She is a wonderful and loving mother, daughter, wife, and sister. As someone who has achieved so much in her personal and professional life despite having experienced many challenges, she has become an example for many families who migrate to Canada.
During the International Women’s Day Gala on Saturday, March 6, Shakiba will be sharing the strategies that have helped her to balance her personal and professional roles. She will discuss how she managed to stay connected to her loved ones while prioritizing her goals and setting necessary boundaries.
