Burnaby Programs for Seniors and People with Disabilities

The city of Burnaby offers useful free programs and services for seniors and, if eligible, people with disabilities. Services include:

  • Recreation Credit Program: the City of Burnaby provides a credit to Burnaby residents in financial need. The credit can be used at any Burnaby Parks, Recreation and Culture facility for programs and admissions. You can apply by filling out the required applications online.
  • Grocery Shop-by-Phone: A volunteer will call on Sundays to take your order and do your shopping at the local IGA. You must be available all day Tuesday to receive your delivery of groceries from IGA and pay by credit card or cheque.
  • Volunteer Visitor: A volunteer provides companionship for you through regular ongoing visits.
  • Volunteer Phone Buddy: A volunteer will call weekly to chat and check on your wellbeing.
  • Volunteer Shopping Buddy: Visit Brentwood or Lougheed Town Centre on Mondays or Metrotown on Thursdays. A volunteer will meet you and assist with your shopping and banking needs or to have a coffee and visit. Free wheelchairs are available if you need help getting around. Staff will arrange for HandyDART to get you to and from the mall.
  • Gadabout Bus Trips: Volunteers will drive you to and from the bus and accompany you on a three hour outing. Staff have First Aid Training.
  • Lunch Program: Enjoy a tasty lunch at the local community centre and make new friends at this volunteer hosted event. A volunteer driver will pick you up and take you home after the luncheon.
  • Burnaby Senior Citizens’ Resource Guide: This is the only complete senior’s guide in the Lower Mainland that includes information about programs, benefits, agencies and services available to seniors.  This free large print book is available at Burnaby Public Libraries, Senior’s Centres or by calling our office at 604-294-7980.
