Bank of Canada’s Unclaimed Balances

Canadian banks and trust companies send funds from inactive accounts to the Bank of Canada (BoC). The BoC has over $577 million in unclaimed funds from accounts dormant for over 10 years. 93% of balances are under $1000. Last year, the BoC paid out $11 mllion to account holders. You may also be able to claim balances on behalf of a corporation or an estate for a loved one that has passed away. There is no fee to submit a claim however, supporting documentation may be required. The Bank of Canada holds unclaimed balances for a limited time.

To identify any balances search the Bank of Canada’s unclaimed balances registry at http://ucbswww.bank-banque-canada.ca/scripts/search_english.cfm If you find an account under yours or a family member's name, fill out a claim form for the balance(s) found and submit it directly from the search results. The current response time is about ten to twelve weeks.

For more information please visit the BoC unclaimed registry website: http://www.bankofcanada.ca/unclaimed-balances/how-to-claim/
