Respect & Support

March 8, 2020 | Canada

It is at times like this that treating each other with respect, compassion and fairness becomes even important. Living within the values of our faith, let’s consider each other’s needs and support one another as best as we can.

  • If you have individuals in your family who are elderly, have a chronic illness or have decreased immunity, talk to them about steps they should take to help prevent infection, including washing hands, avoiding touching one's face, avoiding kissing and handshakes, and staying at home if you do not feel well.
  • Be careful not to make inappropriate judgements about other people, especially ones that are based on race or nationality. Members of our Jamat have experienced discrimination during the COVID-19 outbreak, as a result of their ethnic origin – let's make sure to support each other. Respond respectfully and kindly but firmly to inappropriate comments.
  • Consider the impact of your behaviours on other people.
    • If you think you might have flu-like symptoms, think about who you might infect and how best to avoid doing that.
    • While it’s always good to be prepared, don’t hoard supplies while at the store – this creates a panic mentality, and creates strains on supplies available for others.
  • If you are thinking about whether to do something, don’t think only about how it will affect you – think about how it will impact others. We’re all in this together!
