Staying Healthy

March 8, 2020 | Canada

Prevention

We can all take simple steps to reduce the risk of infectious diseases, including the common cold and COVID-19:

  • Frequently clean your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds; When you are unable to wash your hands, use an alcohol-based sanitizer; See Video: Hand washing
  • Cover your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze, immediately dispose of the used tissue, avoid touching your face; See Video: Prevention
  • Minimizing greetings that involve close contact, including shaking hands and kissing on the cheek. Consider alternative gestures like nodding, bowing, smiling, hand-to-heart, or elbow bumps!
  • Don’t share utensils, dishes, drinking cups or water bottles;
  • Ensure you have at least a 30-day supply of your regular medications;
  • Clean and disinfect commonly-touched surfaces, including doorknobs, handles, handrails, computer keyboards and smartphone screens. Preliminary information suggests COVID-19 may persist on surfaces for a few hours or up to several days; How to Clean and Disinfect
  • If you go to work, school, events or gatherings, wash your hands or use hand sanitizer when you get there and when you leave, and also while there.

As the number of cases of COVID-19 continues to increase in Canada and around the world, we strongly encourage all Jamati members to limit all unnecessary physical contact with others.

Even if you are feeling well:

  • Avoid all gatherings

  • Avoid physical contact with others, such as handshakes and hugs

  • Avoid crowds (including elevators)

  • Limit contact with anyone outside of your immediate family, if possible

If you must leave your home for work or to purchase groceries, keep a minimum distance of 2 metres from others.

Wash your hands OFTEN with soap and water or hand sanitizer.

By limiting your contact with others, you WILL help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Please stay in touch with your loved ones, neighbours, and those who are isolated through calls, texts, video conferencing, etc.

If you require any assistance, please contact the National Access Centre by email or at 1-888-536-3599.

If You Are Sick

  • Stay at home; avoid public spaces and public transportation;
  • Do not go to work or school; do not attend events or gatherings;
  • Seek medical advice - call the public health authority in your region;
  • If you think you may be infectious with flu-like symptoms and you are going to see your doctor or to the hospital, call your doctor’s office or the hospital before arriving there;
  • Avoid having visitors to your home;
  • Ask friends, family members or delivery services to do errands for you; and
  • Do not visit loved ones in hospitals, long-term care or other supported living facilities. People in these locations are at the highest risk of complications from both influenza and COVID-19, as well as other respiratory viruses.
