  • Prince Edward Island Senior's Guide - all resources available for seniors in PEI with description and contact information. Categories include active living and learning, health services, and caregiving.

 

 

  • 811 Telehealth - Dial 8-1-1 a 24-hour phone line for health related issues.

 

  • Community Mental Health - Information on mental health services and referrals to appropriate programs and services. Contact information for different regions is provided. Senior Mental Health Resource teams will see individuals experiencing problems from a new or existing mental illness complicated by the aging process, and dementia with psychiatric complications. There is also a 24/7 mental health and addictions phone line.

 

  • Emergency Department Wait Times - Emergency department wait times for Kings County Memorial Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Prince Country Hospital, and Western Hospital. Click on the Link for each hospital to find Wait Times.

 

  • Virtual Health Care for Islanders without a Primary Care Provider - Virtual health care for individuals without a primary care provider can register online to access health services from a family physician via laptop, smartphone, or tablet. Contact information is provided for community navigators who can provide laptops to patients who do not have the technology required to participate for free. Virtual visits with a family doctor over instant messaging, audio, or video chat

 

  • Seniors' Drug Program - If you are age 65 or older, you are automatically eligible for the cost of approved medications to be covered through this program. Contact information for PEI Pharmacare is provided.

 

  • Geriatric Program - Information on geriatric assessments and the geriatric team, along with contact information for geriatric care. Geriatric assessments may be helpful for those experiencing difficulty with memory, depression, mobility and gait, daily care, and/or medication management. The team includes geriatricians, a nurse practicioner, a geriatric nurse specialist, and an administrative support.

 

  • Alzheimer Societ of PEI - Information on services, programs, and resources for individuals with dementia as well as for caregivers, friends, and family members.

 

  • Patient Navigator Service - Patient Navigator can help you access healthcare services and answer questions about the health care system.

 

  • Seniors Navigator - Provides information to contact or book an appointment with a senior navigator, who can assist seniors by assisting with information and helping to complete applications for services and programs and directing seniors to the appropriate contacts. Seniors will be connected with programs and services from community and governmental organizations.

 

  • Canada Deafblind Association - New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island - Provides support and services to people who have sight or hearing issues and their families.

 

  • Paramedics Providing Palliative Care at Home Program - This program provides palliative in-home care in the evenings and overnight when needed. This is available to those who have registered in the Provincial Integrative Palliative Care Program to receive palliative care at home. Contact information for registration can be found when clicking on the link.
Home Resources
The ability to age in place in one’s own home and community, and to make changes to the home to support one’s needs as they age.
  • Prince Edward Island Senior's Guide - all resources available for seniors in PEI with description and contact information. Categories include active living and learning, health services, and caregiving.

 

  • Home Care Program - This program supports you so you can stay in your home safely and independently for as long as possible. Services include nursing care, home support, palliative care, social work, dietician services, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, adult protection, long-term care, and day programs. Contact information is provided for different regions, as well as a referral form.

 

  • Long-Term Care - Provides eligibility criteria and a description of the public and private long-term care nursing homes available, guiding questions to help you determine if you need long term care and where it might be best for you, and information on cost and subsidization.

 

  • Seniors Independence Initiative - This initiative provides financial assistance for services such as house keeping, meal preparation or meals on wheels, transportation, errands, and yard maintenance to make it easier for seniors to live in their homes. The link leads to a webpage with an application, eligibility information, contact information, and a list of services.

 

  • PEI Home Renovation Programs - This program can financially assist seniors with essential home repairs through the PEI Home Renovation Program, Seniors Home Repair Program, or the Seniors Safe @ Home Program based on different eligibility criteria.

 

  • Seniors Navigator - Provides information to contact or book an appointment with a senior navigator, who can assist seniors by assisting with information and helping to complete applications for services and programs and directing seniors to the appropriate contacts. Seniors will be connected with programs and services from community and governmental organizations.

 

  • Seniors Safe @ Home Program - This program assists seniors with low to moderate incomes who struggle with daily living activities by providing financial assistance to make minor modifications to their home to improve accessibility. An application can be found through this link along with eligibility requirements.

 

  • Seniors Housing Program - A description and list of seniors subsidized housing. These units are available for rent, and the cost depends on the tenant's income. Some units are designed for tenants with disabilities. Contact information and an application form can be found on the linked brochure.

 

  • Home Instead - Private home care services including personal care, nurse directed care, hospice support, meal prep, companionship, transportation, and home care for chronic illnesses.

 

  • Bayshore Health Care - Private homecare services such as: Personal care, in home nursing services, dementia care services, and in home care for different medical conditions.

 

  • Canadian Red Cross Health Equipment Loan Program (HELP) - Provides short term loans of health equipment. The Bed Loan Program delivers and installs home-use hospital beds to PEI residents, and the Short Term Loan Program provides aids such as bath seats, toilet seats, bed handles, wheelchairs, benches, and walkers.
Transportation Resources
Access to and modes of transportation to consider as one ages.
  • Designated Parking Permit Program - Parking permit that allows individuals unable to walk over 75 metres without difficulty or danger to their safety to park in designated spots that are closer to the entrances of buildings. An application is necessary with a doctor completed medical certificate form.

 

  • Driver Refresher Course/55 Alive - A 6 hour course for mature drivers to learn how to drive with physical changes that come with aging and to identify and improve on individual driving behaviours.

 

  • Meals on Wheels - Meal delivery at $4 per meal, which includes an entrée, a starch side, and a dessert. There are different chapters for each region: Alberton, Charlottetown, Evangeline, Kensington, O'Leary, Montague, Souris, Stratford, Summerside, Tyne Valley. Information based on the chapter for your location can be found on the website.

 

  • Transportation West - Affordable transport for medical appointments, grocery shopping, family and social meetings, and prayer services.

 

  • Pat the Elephant - Transportation for people who experience challenges with mobility, seeing, or hearing, with specially equipped vans that have hydraulic lifts, ramps, tie downs, and safety seat belts. Can provide a wheelchair without extra cost, and also provides non-emergency stretcher transportation.

 

  • Ambulance Services and Island EMS - Emergency and non-urgent ambulance services, subsidized for Island residents with a valid PEI Health Card. Emergency service is fully covered for seniors.

 

  • Public Transit (T3 Transit) - Municipal city transit and island wide rural transit. $2 exact fare required. Booking, mapping, and scheduling is available online.
Finance Resources
State of one’s finances and sources of income as they age. Resources to help make legal and financial decisions, financial planners, allowing someone else legal authority to manage one’s finances, etc.
  • Credit Counselling PEI - Certified Credit Counsellors who can review your financial situations, make referrals to support services, and provide assistance and information. Sessions are free of charge.

 

  • Free Tax Clinics - Volunteers can complete taxes for seniors for free, by video conference, phone, or in-person. Various clinics are available in Charlottetown, Stratford, and Summerside.

 

  • Seniors Property Tax Deferral Program - If you are age 65 or older, have occupied your principle residence for at least 6 months in the year before you apply, and have an annual household income under $35,000 you can apply to defer payment of property taxes to lower the cost of living.

 

  • Drug Programs - Links to cost assistance programs for drugs for specific medical conditions.

 

  • Social Assistance Program - This program provides money on a case by case basis to help people meet their basic needs, assisting with payments for food, shelter, medications, basic dental care, glasses, and funerals.

 

 

  • AccessAbility Supports - Supports available for those with physical, intellectual, neurological, sensory, and mental disabilities including upto $10 000 every 10 years for a home and $6000 every 8 years for a vehicle.
Social Resources
Resources to help support one’s social life as they get older and contribute to general well-being and quality of life allowing seniors to live in security, enjoy good health and continue to participate fully in society.
  • Seniors College - For an annual membership fee of $170, seniors can take courses in: the arts and literature, drawing and painting, computers and science, social sciences, history, religion, skills and activities, and participate in discussions.

 

  • go!PEI - Free or low cost community based healthy living initiatives such as: physical activities, Neightbour to Neighbour chats, walk-n-talk groups, chair yoga, and low impact fitness.

 

 

 

  • Immigrants and Refugee Services Association (ISRA) PEI - The ISRA hosts the Seniors' Social Integration Program where newcomer and Island seniors can connect and socialize, and the Friday Friendship Hour Program, which consists of get togethers on Fridays for all members of the community.

 

  • PEI Friendly Visitor Program - Adults 50 years or older volunteer with senior friends and provide companionship to seniors through one hour weekly visits. Activities include playing cards, playing games, chatting, having tea, and reading.

 

  • Adult Day Programs - Programs offered by the province in various locations with group and individual activities for different personal abilities. These programs can support caregivers and may also offer personal care services.

 

  • PEI Party Line - Free phone-based activities particularly for seniors through 45 minute calls on different topics with a guest speakers. Individuals can join the calls, listen, ask questions, and connect.

 

 

  • Public Library Events - Public libraries offer virtual and in-person programs including drop-in computer help, crafternoon for adults, and adult craft nights. Pre-registration for virtual events is required and can be found online.

 

  • Outreach Library Events - The Public Library has a number of services for those who are not able to visit a library, including the Community Care Facility Book Delivery Service for those in long-term care and the Home Library Service that schedules book deliveries. Through its Music and Memory Program, participants can borrow an MP3 player preloaded with a personalized music playlist. This can help with dementia, Alzheimer's, and other issues.
