Woven rugs designed by 36 artists reflect their personal responses to the word Sanctuary in one of the two featured exhibits at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto. The Aga Khan Museum opened its doors to visitors on June 27, 2020 after being closed for three months.

The museum’s other feature exhibit, Don’t Ask Me Where I’m From, explores the post-migrant experience through a collaboration between the Museum and the Benetton Foundation.

According to Moyez Jadavji, Chief Operating Officer of the Aga Khan Museum, it was important for the museum to open their doors so they could welcome back visitors and make them feel comfortable. “By opening the museum we have provided our visitors with the return to a place they know, to learn and explore new exhibits,” said Jadavji.

He explained the museum has put many measures in place to protect visitors during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A maximum of 50 people are allowed in the museum at one time. The museum has added signage throughout as well as installed plexiglass in some areas.

Ticket sales have been moved online and the museum has installed hand-sanitizing stations and  heightened cleaning protocols.

The museum will continue its  “#MuseumWithoutWalls” virtual performances and online events.

Sanctuary will be open until October 25 and Don't Ask Me Where I'm From until October 11.

If you visit the museum before September 7, you will receive a 50 per cent discount on admission.
