Urgent Announcement: All Jamatkhanas in the Ontario are Now Closed

The Government of Ontario has announced additional steps to limit large gatherings to reduce the risk of spread of COVID-19.

While the Public Health Agency of Canada continues to assess the risk to the general population in Canada as “low”, the Jamati Institutions, in consultation with public health officials and with the aim of protecting the most vulnerable in our Jamat, have decided to close all Jamatkhanas in Ontario including university Jamatkhanas, effective immediately. This includes morning, evening and weekend ceremonies. All Jamatkhana-based programming is also cancelled. We will continue to work closely with the public health authorities on the timing of Jamatkhana re-opening and will keep the Jamat informed.

Volunteers will be positioned at Jamatkhanas this evening to inform those who do not receive this message.

The decision to close our Jamatkhanas is unprecedented in Canada and not taken lightly, and we seek the Jamat’s understanding and forgiveness for any inconvenience caused. We are taking these precautionary steps in the interests of the Jamat’s long-term health and security.

The Jamati Institutions will continue to provide regular information and updates to the Jamat via the electronic Al-Akhbar and iiCanada app. We pray for the health and safety of all Canadians and all those impacted globally.

In celebrating Mawlana Hazar Imam's 83rd birthday, let us reflect on our key priorities that will propel our Jamat to even further heights as we approach fifty years of settlement in Canada:

  • Improving the quality of life of every family in the Jamat through the Quality of Life initiative;
  • Championing BUI attendance so that our children can proudly articulate their identity as Canadian Ismaili Muslims;
  • Supporting diversity and inclusion within our Jamat and curating inclusive programs and events for all segments of our Jamat; and
  • Promoting diverse programming at the Ismaili Centre Toronto and positioning it as a leader in civil society dialogue

We continue to be humbled and inspired by all of our volunteers who serve with such grace, compassion and humility both within the Jamat and externally through Ismaili CIVIC and other initiatives. We express our appreciation to all who support the Jamat by giving of their time and knowledge. Thank you for helping to keep our community strong, vibrant and resilient!

We offer prayers for the safety and peace of our spiritual brothers and sisters around the world. We offer our humble shukrana to our beloved Mawlana Hazar Imam for his continued guidance and protection, and pray for the Jamat’s good health, prosperity, faith, and unity. Ameen.
