Healthy Eating
Summertime is a great time to make changes to your diet and to incorporate more exercise in your daily life. Healthy eating through a nutritious, balanced diet can help to reduce health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure, some forms of cancer, heart and respiratory diseases. Here are some facts about healthy eating:
- Did you know that you can improve your overall health by making some small, simple changes in your diet? For instance, choose to steam or lightly sear your foods instead of deep-frying. Switch to brown rice instead of white rice. Eat cereals and porridges which are high in fiber such as Bran Flakes and steel-cut oats.
- Did you know that you need fewer calories and more nutrients as you get older?
- Did you know that some vegetables grow readily and easily in your own backyard? Try planting chives, leeks, lettuce, zucchini, peas, and onions. Not only can you benefit from eating fresh and available vegetables by gardening, you gain an active and wholesome hobby in the process.
Being mindful of your diet, reducing fat and sodium (salt) intake, and increasing your fruit, vegetable and fiber consumption can have significant impacts on your health. For more information, visit http://www2.gov.bc.ca/ and download a free handbook or audiobook on healthy eating for seniors.
