June 28, 2024 | Canada

The University of Alberta recently celebrated the appointment of Nizar J. Somji as its 23rd Chancellor during its Spring Convocation on 21 June 2024.

An esteemed alumnus and a renowned entrepreneur, Chancellor Somji embodies the dedication and leadership that are central to the Ismaili community’s values.

Chancellor Somji has positively impacted Alberta's economy through his diverse business endeavours under the Jaffer Group of Companies. His ventures in sectors such as construction, information technology, and hospitality, underscore his commitment to innovation and economic growth.

His dedication to community service is also notable. His roles, such as President of the Ismaili Council for Edmonton from 2005 to 2009 and his eight-year volunteer role as the global director of campus development and operations at Aga Khan University and Hospital, demonstrate his commitment to educational and community development.

Chancellor Somji was sworn in by Her Honour Salma Lakhani, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta. Both are the first Muslims to hold their respective roles.
