Home Renovation Tax Credit for Seniors and Persons with Disabilities
The Home Renovation Tax Credit for Seniors and Persons with Disabilities assists eligible seniors aged 65 and over and persons with disabilities with the costs of specific permanent home renovations which are done to improve the functionality and accessibility of their homes. This tax credit may provide a refund of up to $1,000 per year (10% of eligible renovations). The Seniors' Home Renovation Tax Credit is refundable, meaning that you will receive money back from the credit even if you don't owe any income tax.
You’re eligible to claim the credit for the year if on the last day of the tax year you are:
- a resident of B.C., and
- a senior or a family member living with a senior, or
- a person with a disability or a family member living with a person with a disability (for 2016 and later tax years).
This tax credit can be claimed by a senior or an eligible relative for any expenses on renovations made after March 31, 2012. If you have missed claiming this credit on your tax return since then, you may request an adjustment to the tax return for the year it was missed.
