Breast Cancer Screening

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women in British Columbia. Breast cancer can occur in men as well, but it is not as common. Tests and treatments for breast cancer vary from person to person, and are based on individual circumstances. Certain factors such as your age, family history, or a previous breast cancer diagnosis may increase your risk of developing breast cancer. For information about your specific risk factors, speak with your health care provider.

The most common and effective way of finding breast cancer in its early stages is through mammography screening. Mammography screening for women at average risk of breast cancer (no first-degree relatives with breast cancer) is recommended once every two years for women aged 50-74. Women aged 40-49, and 75+, are encouraged to speak to their health care provider to determine if mammography screening would be beneficial, and to weigh the pros and cons of screening.

Recently, advocates against breast cancer screening have voiced concerns that mammography does not result in fewer deaths due to breast cancer overall, and that the anxiety caused by false-positive results is unnecessary. However, research across the world consistently finds that the benefits of mammography screening outweigh the harms. This is why it is important for all women, despite their age, should speak to their doctor and get multiple opinions on whether mammography is right for you.
