iCanCode Application Assessment

ECONOMIC PLANNING BOARD FOR ONTARIO

iCanCode Application Assessment

Thank you for applying to iCanCode, and congratulations for making it to the next step of the application process, which is the assessment below. Please allocate around 2 hours of your time to complete this assessment by answering ALL questions. Good Luck! Please complete this application by 14:00 (EST) on Saturday, March 28.

About this Program

MANDATORY PROJECT WORK - All participants in iCanCode must be able to come up with their own idea of a project, and they will continue building till the end of this course and eventually have their idea in the form of a web application. Therefore the Candidates are required to complete projects after completion of every area (i.e. HTML, CSS, JS, Java, etc.).

Your Introduction

First HTML Page Questions

Please watch this video before attempting any of the questions in this section.

Logical-Numerical Reasoning

Please choose the best answer for each of the following questions in this section.

Logical-Verbal Reasoning

Please choose the best answer for each of the following questions in this section.

Logical-Letter Reasoning

Please choose the best answers to complete the following letter patterns in this section.

Research Questions

The following two questions will require you to do your own research online and to answer them based on your own understandings. All solutions must be submitted in your own words.

Q1) What is the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC)? Please explain each phase of the SDLC. (100 words or more required)

2) For each of the following SDLC methodologies, please explain what each one is as well as the main advantages/disadvantages of each. After, please explain which of the following methodologies do you think is the best one to use and why? (200 words or more required)

  • Prototype
  • Waterfall
  • V Model
  • Iterative
  • Spiral
  • Lean
  • Agile
  • DevOps

Challenge Questions

In the following two hypothetical challenge questions, you are required to clearly explain your answers and justify all steps and assumptions you have made to reach a potential conclusion. A final result or a working program is NOT required in your solutions, but you will be evaluated on the methodologies you come up with to arrive at a solution. These two questions are meant to challenge your critical thinking skills as well as your ability to come up with innovative solutions. While there is no right or wrong answer for most of it, you are expected to come up with a well justified solution for each of the two questions.

Q1) Please watch this video before attempting to answer this question. You are asked by your professor to design an algorithm to display all prime numbers between 0 to 1000. In 100 words or more, please describe how you will go about doing this? You are NOT required to determine all prime numbers, but you must justify a solution for determining these prime numbers whilst making use of the concepts presented in the video. (Hints: Using the modulo mathematic operation (%) may be helpful, as this calculates the remainder of any short division operation (i.e. 8 % 2 = 0 ; 11 % 3 = 2). Also a prime number is any number that is only divisible by both itself and one).

Q2) In a hypothetical situation: In order to limit congestion and pollution on a daily basis in city of Toronto, the Premier of Ontario has decided to impose tolls on all cars/vans entering and operating within the City of Toronto (like the Congestion Charge in London, England). As the Minister of Transportation, you are tasked with implementing a system to collect tolls from ALL vehicles, which must be cost friendly (for the government), decreases congestion, be efficient, and be environmentally friendly. In 150 words or more, you are required to come up with a solution for a Toronto Congestion Charge system that meets all the above criteria. You must also take into account the following in your solution: 1) How are you going to count the number of vehicles? 2) All Resources required (i.e staff, infrastructure, etc) 3) How to account for counting errors (ie double, missed, or incorrect counting)? 4) How to bill customers, and how to reach/contact them? 5) Have customers paid and what to do if they have or haven't 6) What potential issues are there with your solution and how you would account for them?

Please Note That:

1) Candidates who do not complete nor spend sufficient time with this assessment may no longer be considered for a placement in this program, but can re-apply in the next phase. Successfully completing this assessment will allow you to properly demonstrate that you are willing to put in the required time and effort towards completing this course.
2) Candidates who cannot sufficiently complete the projects will be removed from the course, but will be allowed to apply in the next phase.
3) Candidates who are not interested in learning any of the above technical skills should not apply to this program.
