Quote of the Week
“Just why should the Ismaili Imamat become so deeply involved in the world of professional architecture? The simple answer lies in my conviction that Architecture – more than any other art form – has a profound impact on the quality of human life. As it has often been said, we shape our built environment – and then our buildings shape us. This close relationship of architecture to the quality of human experience has a particularly profound resonance in the developing world. I believe that we all have a responsibility to improve the quality of life whenever and wherever that opportunity arises. Our commitment to influencing the quality of architecture – intellectually and materially – grows directly out of our commitment to improving the quality of human life.” Mawlana Hazar Imam, Kazan, Russian Federation, September 13, 2019 |

Peanut and Tree Nut Allergies
Creating a safer, more inclusive environment in Jamatkhanas...
Food allergies are an important public health concern and reactions to some allergens can be life threatening. About 1 in 13 or 2.5 million Canadians suffer from a food allergy, including 300,000 children. Peanut and tree nut allergies are most common, with 2% of children affected. A fatal reaction to exposure from trace amounts can occur in minutes. Common tree nuts include: - almonds
- brazil nuts
- cashews
- chestnuts
- hazelnuts (e.g. filberts)
- hickory nuts
- macadamia nuts
- pecans
- pine nuts (e.g. pinon, pignolias)
- pistachios
- shea nuts (e.g. shea butter)
- walnuts
The intent of the Council for Canada’s Peanut and Tree Nut Allergy Policy is to create a safer, more inclusive environment in Jamatkhanas to ensure Jamati members, particularly children, can participate fully. It is not to create a completely nut-free environment.
Responsibility for safety of children at risk remains with parents, who are encouraged to always carry an epinephrine auto-injector. The Jamat is reminded to avoid bringing peanuts or tree nuts in Jamatkhana spaces.

WOW: Words of Wisdom
WOW is designed to motivate and inspire, promote self-discovery and aid in continued personal development....
WOW is designed to motivate and inspire, promote self-discovery and aid in continued personal development. Each week the column will present a powerful quote, metaphor, short parable or thought-provoking question, sourced and selected by experts in the personal development field. Be Mindful Of The Wonder What we see in the world around us is to a large extent a matter of choice. Do we take time every day to look, really look, at things? To find the beauty, or the humor, or the charm, or the mystery in them? The more we can be mindful of what we are doing as we are doing it, the healthier and happier we will be. The best advice for becoming more mindful is to read—and reread—Helen Keller’s essay “Three Days To See.” Keller, who lost her sight and hearing when she was nineteen months old as a result of an illness, writes about what she would do if she were given back the use of these senses for just three days. In the essay, she recounts a conversation she had with a friend who returned from an hour-long walk in the woods. Keller asked her friend what she saw, and the friend replies, “Nothing in particular.” Keller wonders how it is possible to walk through the woods and yet see nothing worthy of note: I who am blind can give one hint to those who see—one admonition to those who would make full use of the gift of sight; Use your eyes as if tomorrow you would be stricken blind…Hear the music of voices, the song of a bird, the mighty strain of an orchestra, as if you would be stricken deaf tomorrow. Touch each object you want to touch as if tomorrow your tactile sense would fail. Smell the perfume of flowers, taste with relish each morsel, as if tomorrow you could never smell and taste again. Make the most of every sense; glory in all the facets of pleasure and beauty which the world reveals to you. Sometimes all we need to do is open our senses and take in the wonders of the world. Helen Keller, despite her inability to hear or see, can remind us of how privileged we are to be able to directly experience the most precious treasures that are around us and within us—sights and sounds, tastes and textures, smells and sensations. Those who dwell among the beauties and mysteries of the earth are never alone or weary of life. WOW is an invitation to enter the portals of self-discovery, so step through and enjoy the journey. We look forward to your feedback and to know how you benefited from the insights. You can email us at wow@ijkc.com.
