Ottawa Discovery Counsellor Application

Discovery (ages 6- 9)

This fun-filled and inspiring 2-week summer day program for Ismaili Muslim youth between the ages of 6-9 is geared towards reinforcing the ethics and values of the Shia Ismaili Muslim faith.  The program aims to help participants discover their potential and understanding through activities, discussions, role plays and sport.  Discovery will create lasting impressions on all participants as they learn about themselves and their role in the communities in which they live.

Job Description:

Counsellors will work with their Directors and Counsellors-in-Training to plan, execute and assess all aspects of the program within their region. Counsellors will ensure that National curriculum and activities are implemented at the Regional level, and will work within a team to ensure a safe, enjoyable, and memorable experience for all participants. 

Time commitment for the program includes work on evenings and weekends.  Counsellors must be available to attend training and the full duration of the camp. Please note this position will be given an honorarium.  

Positions will be filled conditional upon the satisfactory outcome of a vulnerable sector check.

Requirements:

Ideal applicants will meet the following requirements:

  • Applicant should be 16 years of age or older by application deadline
  • Previous experience with kids
  • Applicant must have or be willing to obtain First Aid Certification
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong public speaking, presentation, and group facilitation skills
  • Past experiences with Ismaili or external summer programs are an asset, but not required

Responsibilities: 

  • Assist with participant marketing and recruitment
  • Participate in Parent Orientation session
  • Become familiar with the program, curriculum and supplies/materials prior to sessions
  • Prepare lesson plans and facilitate modules, events, and activities as assigned
  • Monitor, supervise, and ensure overall health, well-being and safety of participants
  • Develop relationships with all participants, while role-modelling professional, acceptable behaviour
  • Provide regular feedback relating to activities, events, curriculum, and operations to Program Directors
  • Attend all training sessions and staff meetings
  • Adhere to staff Code of Conduct and all supplementary policies and regulations
  • Maintain confidentiality of all participants and staff
  • Mentor Counsellors-in-Training
