Canada’s Average House Prices Drop

The past few months have taken a sharp reversal in Toronto’s home prices and has led the property market into total chaos. Many buyers now desperately want to get out of deals that looked good just a few months ago. This desperation not only comes from those who bid at the peak and now want out but also due to lenders tightening their credit and property appraisers lowering their value. With lenders sending out appraisers who are judging the property is worth less than what the buyer offered a few months ago, a lower valuation means a smaller loan from the lender.

More than half of Canadians expect to leave assets upon their death, but when it comes to having conversations about transferring their wealth, many say they have not discussed it with their family or a financial advisor, according to a survey done by CIBC. On top of that, 79% say they haven’t discussed the financial and tax implications of an inheritance with a financial advisor. For families involved in businesses, things could get more complicated, negatively impacting the value of their business. What could be the reasons? Lack of communication, insufficient planning or other?

Come and learn from a panel of experts.

The Economic Planning Board for Ontario will be holding a seminar with a number of financial planning experts, followed by a panel of prominent Ismailis, to discuss real world strategies and share experiences from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Ismaili Centre. Lunch will be included.

Limited tickets are available; register and purchase your ticket here. Early bird tickets are on sale for a limited time. Family and friends of other faiths are welcome to attend.

Interest Rates

The Jamat is aware that the Central Bank of Canada increased its interest rate in July by 0.25%, the first such increase in 7 years, and has signaled its intention to continue to raise interest rates. Another increase may come as early as October 2017. The lending banks have already increased the cost of borrowing for lines of credit, home equity loans, variable mortgages and mortgage renewals.

The Jamat is urged to review their personal finances to determine the impact of this rate increase and subsequent rate increases. Reducing debt and living within your budgets is always a good policy. Contact the Economic Planning Board representatives for more information or support.
