Interest Rates

The Jamat is aware that the Central Bank of Canada increased its interest rate in July by 0.25%, the first such increase in 7 years, and has signaled its intention to continue to raise interest rates. Another increase may come as early as October 2017. The lending banks have already increased the cost of borrowing for lines of credit, home equity loans, variable mortgages and mortgage renewals.

The Jamat is urged to review their personal finances to determine the impact of this rate increase and subsequent rate increases. Reducing debt and living within your budgets is always a good policy.

Contact the Economic Planning Board representatives for more information or support.

For residents within the City of Toronto, financial assistance is available. The municipal government has put $37 million toward the costs of flood-proofing for over 20 thousand properties through the Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program.

As per the Program site, the City offers owners of single-family, duplex and triplex residential homes a financial subsidy of up to $3,400 per property on a first-come, first-served basis.

Homeowners must apply for the subsidy and ensure they meet all conditions to be eligible. For more details on the program or to apply for the subsidy, visit the City of Toronto website

Preventing Fraud and Identity Theft

In a recent article by the Toronto Star, Toronto Police have seen an increase in scams targeting the public. Senior citizens tend to be easy targets as it's likely they possess valued assets, like a home. The Older Women's Network (Ontario) has also identified an increase in calls by CRA scammers, especially during tax season. All members of the Jamat are strongly encouraged to beware of such activity and take necessary precautions.

There are a number of ways to detect and avoid scams; learn how to identify them and protect yourself and your family.

Please refer to the Fraud Toolkit and Safety for Seniors Update. Members of the Jamat with elderly parents are encouraged to share this information and actively communicate on the topic.
