Do you need help filing your tax return? The deadline for filing your taxes this year is Sunday, April 30. The Economic Planning Board for Ontario is pleased to offer eligible members of the Jamat assistance in filing their returns. Appointments are required and are provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Please see your Jamati EPB representative or email epbotaxclinics@iicanada.net to book an appointment.

 

Income Thresholds:

Tax clinic services are provided to individuals with the maximum income of:

  • $30,000 for individuals
  • $35,000 for individuals with one dependent (an additional $2,500 for each additional dependent)
  • $40,000 for couples (an additional $2,500 for each dependent)

 

Required personal and residence information:

  • Valid government issued photo ID for each individual requiring a tax return to be completed
  • Name, address, telephone number, Social Insurance Number, date of birth
  • Name, Social Insurance Number, date of birth for spouse and dependents
  • Property taxes paid or rent paid and name of the landlord
  • Letter from nursing home detailing the breakdown of the rent and other expenses paid
  • Details of all 2016 places of residence

 

Required documentation:

  • Copy of last year’s tax return
  • Notice of Assessment
  • T4 slips, including any T4As
  • RRSP contribution receipts
  • Charitable donation contribution receipts
  • T3s (investment income), T5007
  • T5s (interest income)
  • Medical expense receipts
  • Investment transactions
  • T2202A Tuition Certificate if attending university or college (Note: this will need to printed from the university/college website as they are no longer mailed)

Our Jamat has increasingly become the target of fraud. Detective Karim Bardai from York Region Police, an expert in fraud investigation, will provide a session on fraud prevention on Friday, April 21 at East York Jamatkhana after Jamati ceremonies. Detective Bardai will speak on some of the fraud scams and how members of the Jamat can protect themselves from fraudulent activities as well as identity theft. All attendees will receive a free Fraud Prevention Toolkit.

Financial Information Lounge

Financial Information Lounge, a web‐based financial education centre that has been set up exclusively for our Jamat through Consolidated Credit Counselling Services of Canada, a national non‐profit organization. The Financial Information Lounge offers unbiased debt‐counselling service and offers alternatives to help people get their debts under control. In addition to offering solutions to alleviate and eliminate debt, the site also focuses on financial education and understanding. The toll‐free number 1‐844‐329‐3834 has also been set up for our Jamat to speak to a trained credit counsellor from Consolidated Credit in English, French or Farsi on a confidential basis.

2017 Tax Return Filing - Assistance Available

Do you need help to file your income tax return? The Economic Planning Board can setup free one on one sessions, for low-income individuals or families, with qualified accountants to help you with filing your 2016 taxes.  Information that the tax accountant will need includes Old Age Security, Canada Pension Plan and Medical Information slips and 2015 T1 tax return with the Canada Revenue Agency notice of assessment for 2015, if available.
