Canada-BC Job Grant

The Canada-B.C. Job Grant (CJG) is an employer-driven, cost-sharing program that helps employers invest in training for their current or future employees.

CJG assists eligible employers to offset the cost of training up to a maximum of $10,000 per participant per fiscal year, and up to a maximum of $15,000 per participant per fiscal year for the unemployed stream.

The employer contributes at least one-third to the cost of training, with the exception of the unemployed stream. The employer must have a job for the participant at the end of training.

The goals of the CJG are to increase participation of British Columbians in the labour force by helping them develop the skills they need to find and keep a job. The CJG is also an opportunity for employers to invest in training that is better aligned to job opportunities.

ASPECT is a Canada-BC Job Grant Delivery Partner and will assist you with completing and submitting grant applications, assessing skills needs, and developing training plans.

Potential Risks of Syndicated Mortgages

A syndicated mortgage can be as simple as two people jointly loaning a third person a mortgage on their home, or as complex as a group of investors jointly backing a major development project. These products are often pitched as high-return, low-risk investments.

Money is raised by developers and builders to fund the earliest stages of development – to acquire land, hire architects, or obtain building permits – before bank financing is available. In this early stage, there is a possibility that things could go wrong. For example, permits could be denied, construction could be delayed, too few units could be pre-sold, or there could be an economic downturn. Syndicated mortgage investors are subordinate to banks and other primary lenders, meaning that they’re further back in line for repayment if something goes wrong with a project.

Before making a decision to invest in syndicated mortgages on development projects, ensure that you do your due diligence, scrutinize the track record of the developer, examine the actual location of the project, and understand the potential risks. If possible, have a discussion with your financial advisor.

Notice – Investment Scheme Targeting Women

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has recently advised of a pyramid scheme targeting women in the Lower Mainland. Known as a 'Gifting Circle', 'Women's Financial Circle', 'Women's Financial Collective' or 'Women's Wisdom Circle', the scheme often involves women being invited to an event to support a woman or a family that needs help. Attendees are then presented an opportunity of a large profit for investing and recruiting friends. The presentation is made under the guise of supporting female empowerment and its organizers claim to create abundance and spiritual healing for those who sign up.

For more information or to report a scam, please contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca or toll free at 1-888-495-8501.

If you believe you may be the victim of fraud or have given personal or financial information unwittingly, please contact your local police service.

How to avoid falling victim

Here are the BBB's tips to avoid a pyramid scheme:

  • Be wary of "opportunities" to invest in things where the success or failure relies on recruitment.
  • Independently verify the legitimacy of any franchise or investment before you invest.
  • If it seems too good to be true, it is.
  • Investigate. Ask around. Search online. Be skeptical.
  • If no product or service is being offered or sold, how does it make money?
  • Invest your money with reputable investment professionals and firms with a track record.
  • Be very wary of investments that promise low risk and high returns.
  • Don't let greed overcome good judgment.
  • Getting involved could have a negative and lasting effect on friendships.
  • If you have any concerns contact the BBB.
  • Investment concerns can also be directed to the BC Securities Commission.
