Are You Voting for the First Time?
Many young Canadians will be eligible to vote in the upcoming election for the first time. Statistics Canada estimates that around 811,000 people will have reached the voting age of 18 in the time between the 2019 general election and the end of September 2021. And this figure doesn’t capture all first-time voters: not included are those who recently obtained Canadian citizenship and people who are eligible to vote but have previously chosen not to.
Elections Canada's research shows that young people, especially first-time voters, can face significant barriers to participating in federal elections, including difficulties with registration because young people tend to move often - which can make it hard to provide a proof of address. However, these challenges can be overcome with a little bit of persistence - so make sure your voice is heard and vote in the upcoming election!
