How to Find the Right Psychotherapist or Counsellor
Psychotherapy is a service offered by a professional to support someone with their mental health. To learn more about what psychotherapy is, check out the previous article. Finding a psychotherapist or a counsellor who is a good fit can be an important factor in supporting you to reach your goals. The following are some suggestions to consider when looking for a psychotherapist.
Expertise
It is important for the psychotherapist to have training and experience working with those who present similar concerns as you do. For example, if you are struggling with disordered eating, you want to make sure that the psychotherapist has taken additional training to support you in that area.
Connection
The relationship between a client and their psychotherapist is an intimate one as you discuss things that may leave you feeling vulnerable. Perhaps this psychotherapist will hear you share things you have not told anyone before or will see you in a state that you do not allow others in your life to see. The relationship must feel safe for you for you to do your inner healing. That is why making sure you feel a sense of connection with the psychotherapist is important. You want to feel that the psychotherapist understands you, cares for your well-being and can sit with you through the ups and downs of your journey.
Logistics
Some logistical factors are important to consider when searching for a psychotherapist. These factors include the psychotherapist's availability for sessions, cost, cancellation policies and if they offer services in person or virtually. Many psychotherapists offer a consultation prior to enlisting their services where you can ask these questions.
Questions you can ask a psychotherapist you are interested in working with:
- What is your experience working with my area of concern?
- Now that I have shared some of my concerns, how do you see that you might be able to help me?
- What are your expectations of me as a client?
- What is your approach to psychotherapy?
- How often are you available to meet?
- What is the cost for a session? What forms of payment do you accept?
- What is your policy around confidentiality and cancellations?
- Where can I find a psychotherapist?
