Dr. Nureen Sumar is a physician, musician, and community leader.  She is passionate about the arts and its ability to serve as a medium to connect across perceived boundaries and heal the places within our beings where medicine cannot reach.

Her unique interdisciplinary training in music and medicine combined with deep rooted servant-leadership aspirations have given rise to a rich vocation serving in the fields of oncology, survivorship, end-of-life care, addictions medicine, and medical education.  Science drives her artistic endeavours and art inspires her clinical practice – both inextricably connected.

“My clinical work harmoniously transitions to my ongoing pursuits in collaborative arts initiatives - both endeavours nurturing intellectual flexibility, creativity, and growth.  Through my musician-scientist journey, I have developed the courage to endeavour beyond perceived boundaries in music, medicine, and academic endeavours.  Each journey enriching the other … serving as a medium to drive change and connect to the human spirit. Art is in everything I do.”

During Jubilee Arts Nureen performed with the group Tasmiya at the national level.  Later at the international festival in Lisbon she was invited to be a Master Coach and help prepare national winners from around the world for their performances, helping to ehance their experience and growth as artists.  She also led several workshops at the international festival on A Capella singing/songwriting, performance readiness, and on-stage performance training.”

As a vocalist, arranger, composer, and producer Nureen has gone on to compete, perform, and record internationally in numerous contexts, including the touring production "Rihla - from roots to dreams", collaborations with Bollywood composers Salim-Sulaiman, and intercontinental choral arrangements and collaborations with Farhan Shah and Shahid Rehman, featuring renowned devotional artists including Sufi legends Fareed Ayaz and Abu Muhammad Qawwal and Brothers.  She also had honour of performing at the historic events of Mawlana Hazar Imam’s 80th Birthday and Diamond Jubilee Homage ceremonies at Aiglemont in Gouvieux, France.  She feels blessed to continue learning and growing as an artist and physician leader – both medicine and art serving as a medium for personal growth, connection and healing.  Her artistic roots are intimately woven through her clinical work and will guide her through her newest service endeavour supporting the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya.
