Amirali Alibhai - visual & live artist

Currently the Head of Performing Arts at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, as well as visual, live, and community-based arts curator/ educator/administrator.

Amirali Alibhai earned his BSc in Microbiology (1985), BFA Visual Arts (1989) and MA Art Education (2000) from the University of British Columbia.

Currently the Head of Performing Arts at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, his professional experience includes roles as an artist, curator/ educator/administrator within the fields of visual, live and community-based arts. He has worked with diverse artists and organizations, representing multiple disciplines and cultural traditions for 30 years (1989-present).

He was a founder of the Rungh Cultural Society and its magazine, Rungh (1992-1997) which published original content about South Asian artists in the diaspora, including literary, visual, film and performance work being created in Canada and internationally. He was part of the founding team that established the Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre in Vancouver – developing artist-in-community residencies and partnerships in all disciplines for over 12 years. He also worked as a Cultural Planner for the City of North Vancouver and the District of North Vancouver.

Prior to joining the Aga Khan Museum, Amir was Executive Director of the Greater Vancouver Alliance for Arts and Culture (2009-2012). He has volunteered on various boards and public committees, including the Board of the Canada Council for the Arts (2005-2008), the Canadian Arts Summit Steering and Programming Committees (2016 to 2019) and the Toronto Arts Council’s Music Committee (2015-2018). Amir is currently on the Program Advisory Committee at Centennial College as well as the Advisory Committee for the National Network of Legal Clinics.
