Vein to Vein: The Journey of Donated Blood in Canada

Description

In recognition of National Blood Donor Week, we invite you to join Dr. Kareem Jamani (Clinical Assistant Professor at the Division of Hematology, Alberta Blood and Marrow Transplant Program, University of Calgary), and Stephanie Pederson (Territory Manager with Canadian Blood Services in British Columbia) in conversation with moderator Noorshan Nanji (Registered Nurse) for an educational and informative webinar. They will discuss the indications for blood transfusion, the importance of blood donation, and will take you through the journey of donated blood - from donor, through processing, and finally transfusion to the recipient. Information will also be provided on how participants, their friends, family members and colleagues can participate in a blood donation drive being run by Ismaili CIVIC and Canadian Blood Services from June 13-19.

Dr. Kareem Jamani is a clinical assistant professor in the Division of Hematology and the Alberta Blood and Marrow Transplant program at the University of Calgary. He completed his medical training at the University of Western Ontario, the University of Calgary and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre. He also holds a Master’s degree in public health from the Harvard School of Public Health.

Stephanie Pedersen is a Territory Manager with the Canadian Blood Services, and has over fifteen years of experience working in the non-profit sector. Since joining the Canadian Blood Services over eleven years ago, Stephanie has held a variety of roles within the Donor Relations department, which has provided a solid foundation of knowledge and experience about blood products and the donation process. Stephanie has lived in the Lower Mainland most of her life and has been living in Ladner for over three years. She remains pleasantly busy on evenings and weekends by spending time with her two young daughters and her husband.

Noorshan Nanji is a Registered Nurse with a passion for community and public health. She completed her Bachelor of Arts in Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University in 2015, and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in 2019. Noorshan believes in the importance of delivering quality health education so that patients can feel empowered to take charge of their own health. She works as a Clinical Content Analyst for a startup company called Thrive Health, where she curates content and health education materials for the national Canada COVID-19 app. She also works as a Stroke Nurse at Royal Columbian Hospital.
