This year, World Suicide Prevention Day is September 10, 2018!
In Canada, 10 people end their lives and 200 make a suicide attempt every day. Suicide occurs across all age, economic, social, and ethnic boundaries. The pain that leads individuals to take their lives is unimaginable, and their deaths impact their family, friends, and community.
As a Jamat, let us continue to support one another, and remember that one person can make all the difference in supporting another person in need.
World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) is an opportunity for everyone in the community to join together to promote understanding about suicide and highlight effective prevention activities. Light a Candle and place it near a window on Monday, September 10. Throughout the world, candles will shine as beacons of hope to all those impacted by suicide.
If you are unsure if you or someone you love is facing a crisis, consider the 3 Ds:
Level of Distress |
How much discomfort are you/they feeling? |
Level of Dysfunction |
Are you/they able to care for themselves? Able to problem solve and make decisions? |
Possibility of Danger |
Are there thoughts of suicide or harm to others? |
Other worrisome signs may include:
- Diminished social supports – e.g. estrangement from family
- Lack of stable housing
- Financial strain
- Substance abuse
- Withdrawing from community supports
If you or someone you love has been affected by suicide or is considering suicide, there are several confidential, professional, and very resourceful services that could help.
