Using E-commerce To Drive Your Business

E-commerce was 10.4% of retail sales in 2017. Today, e-commerce makes up over 16% of all retail sales, showing a dramatic 50% increase.

COVID-19 has accelerated our progression towards a digital economy, and although retail is re-opening in Canada, businesses must continue to offer their products and services online to sustain themselves and, in certain instances, to survive.

Building your own e-commerce store is an ideal way to do this. In today’s panel hosted by Shopify, we will be joined by Telly Carayannakis, the Marketing Director for Greenhouse (Canada’s leading organic, plant-based beverage brand), and David Gaylord, founder of BushBalm (an innovative skin care brand).

Moderated by Tim Wang, City of Toronto Community Lead at Shopify, we will discuss what is achievable via e-commerce, how physical retailers can adapt to online-first business, and best strategies on how to operate a successful e-commerce store.

Key Topics:

  1. How to create and implement an effective digital marketing strategy for your consumer brand.
  2. Challenges with operating in e-commerce and how to navigate them successfully.
  3. The future of e-commerce and what to expect in the coming years.

Accelerating Digital Transformation and Navigating Change

COVID-19 has accelerated digital transformation. Some small and medium businesses (SMBs) have pivoted operations online to build customer loyalty and recover revenue, while others have not been able to. Digital transformation is essential for building short-term as well as long-term sustainability. Looking ahead, it will be critical for SMBs to have a strong and dynamic online presence in order to be more resilient and ultimately, to thrive.

This webinar will feature Dave Friesema: CEO of Sleep Country Canada. He is leading Sleep Country through a large-scale and rewarding digital transformation, while remaining focused on customers, employees, and communities. Upholding values is even more important during times of change.

Moderating this discussion is Zabeen Hirji: Board Director at Sleep Country Canada, as well as Executive Advisor, Future of Work at Deloitte. Dave will candidly share his experiences, including challenging moments after the pandemic hit. He will provide practical advice on the digital journey, such as what worked and what didn't. There will be time for questions from the audience.

Key takeaways about the digital transformation journey:

  • The opportunities and risks, and why this is imperative for all businesses, large and small.
  • Putting the customer (not the organization) at the centre of the transformation.
  • Insights from periods of global uncertainty and complexity.
  • Mobilizing and inspiring people to embrace change and pivot.

Employment Opportunity: Executive Director, Future Ready Initiative

The Future Ready Initiative is the Council for Canada’s integrated, institutional response to some of the most significant, urgent changes facing the Jamat in Canada, and those with whom the Jamat lives. The Program responds to four inter-related needs within the Jamat: i) family mentorship; ii) employment, including the Future of Work and Future of Business; iii) mental health; and iv) youth mentorship and leadership development. The impact of COVID-19 and the acceleration of significant shifts in business and labour markets have underscored the urgency of the Future of Work and Business. In common across all programmatic responses to these four pillars, the program relies on the dual concepts of professional navigation and individual agency.

The Initiative is an ambitious undertaking which will reposition the support provided to the Jamat and the ways in which the Jamati Institutions engage with the Jamat over the next decade. It will fundamentally shift the level of aspiration for the Jamat and expectation of delivery – both of staff and volunteers.

The Council for Canada is seeking to recruit an Executive Director with demonstrated strategic leadership skills, strong people and process management, an ability to work effectively with the Jamati Institutions to drive to outcomes, and an entrepreneurial mindset to build a new institution.  Reporting to the Council for Canada President, the Executive Director can be based anywhere in Canada.
